Bereavement Support - Symbols

Meaning of the Heart, Teardrop, and Leaf

Heart and Teardrop

The heart and teardrop symbolize the loss and grief parents feel when a baby dies.

Leaf and Teardrop

The leaf was designed to reflect both the intense suffering of the experience of loss and hope for the future.  The leaf, though fallen, is green with upturned edges, symbolizing hope.  The leaf floats on a pond of water that is not stagnant but is rippling, symbolizing that there is movement in grief and hope for the future.  The coloration in the leaf picture goes from a very deep and dark purple, which represents the intense sadness, to a much lighter and paler shade of purple, which symbolizes light, hope, and the future.  The drop on the leaf is either a dew drop or a teardrop--meant to be whatever the person looking at the pictures wants it to be.

The overall theme of the picture is that as in nature, there are cycles and movement in grief.  As seasons change, so do feelings.  There is water and there are tears, there is winter and there is spring, there is sadness and there is hope.  It is all of these things that are reflected in the RTS logo.
