Introduction
The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology diagnoses and provides treatment to children with a variety of blood diseases and different types of cancer. We have been affiliated since 1995 with the Children's Oncology Group (COG), an international organization of hospitals and medical centers working together to improve the care of children with cancer. This affiliation allows us to provide the most modern, up-to-date care available to children with any type of cancer. We are located in the Charette Health Care Center in Portsmouth, VA, a state-of-the-art medical facility designed to provide cutting edge care in comfortable surroundings. With support from our surgery, pathology, radiology, and radiation therapy colleagues we are able to offer a full complement of services to those children who require them. The social and emotional needs are not forgotten; we have an excellent social work division that will assist families in dealing with the challenges that result from having a child with one of these disorders. A play therapy program was recently introduced that assists our children in many ways, from simply giving them an opportunity to be kids despite their diagnoses to helping them stay successful in school despite their treatment schedules. We also have an outstanding track record in providing broad base support to military families within our region as well as to families moving to our area. Our location allows military members to support their families during comprehensive pediatric hematology/oncology treatment while serving their country.
