Commander Smith was born on Dover Air Force Base, Dover, Delaware.  The son of a United States Air Force Sergeant, he grew up in many places both in the United States and abroad.  He attended Valdosta State College in Valdosta, Georgia graduating in 1988 with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing.  After working one year as a civilian Registered Nurse, he entered the Navy Nurse Corps under the Direct Commissioning Program and was sworn in as an Ensign in April, 1989.

Senior Chief Bockelman was born and raised in Warren, OH.  He joined the Navy in 1987 and attended boot camp at Recruit Training Command followed by Aviation Apprentice Training in Great Lakes, Ill.
